Patello-femoral joint kinematics in the natural knee. A robust in-vitro analysis

چکیده
Patellar maltracking results in many patello-femoral joint (PFJ) disorders, usually source of anterior knee pain. In the intact knee, this maltracking is generally due to abnormalities in the PFJ interface, soft tissue tightening and lower limb rotations. In the replaced knee, PFJ maltracking is generally due to prosthesis component misalignments in both PFJ and tibio-femoral joint (TFJ), inaccurate soft tissue balancing, and inappropriate patellar component positioning, in case of patellar resurfacing. These can lead to anterior knee pain and failure of the total knee replacement [1].

A new in vivo technique for determination of 3D kinematics and contact areas of the patello-femoral and tibio-femoral joint.
Patello-femoral disorders are often caused by changes of patello-femoral and/or tibio-femoral kinematics. However, until now there has been no quantitative in vivo technique, that is able to obtain 3D kinematics and contact areas of all knee compartments simultaneously on a non-invasive basis. The aim of this study was therefore to develop and apply a technique which allows for determination of...
متن کاملIn-vivo Knee Kinematics after Total Joint Arthroplasty. a Novel Fluoroscopy-based Technique for Tracking Patellar Motion
Total knee arthroplasty is an effective surgical treatment, although patients do not recover completely normal lower limb joint kinematics and kinetics, and normal muscle activity in daily living activities at the operated knee. Whereas the tibio-femoral joint has been largely exploited in the past using several methodologies, the patello-femoral joint, which plays a fundamental role in the ext...
متن کاملPatellar Tendon Angle as an Indicator of Function in Total Knee Athroplasty
Patello-Femoral Angle (PFA) has been measured in several different techniques to assess patello-femoral joint function as a possible indicator of tibio-femoral antero-posterior translation and anterior knee pain [3,2,4] in patients operated on Total Knee Arthroplasty. The inclination of the patellar tendon in the tibial sagittal plane during knee flexion is important because it can reflect the ...
متن کاملBasic kinematics and biomechanics of the patello-femoral joint. Part 1: The native patella.
The patello-femoral joint (PFJ) enhances our ability of knee flexion and extension and is assumed to have evolved through men's ability of having adopted a bipedal gait. This articulation between patella and femur is relatively complex and displays intricate biomechanical behaviour. Forces in the patello-femoral joint are a function of the quadriceps force, and the angle of flexion of the knee....
متن کاملQuantitative Analysis of Knee Movement Patterns Through Comparative Visualization
In this paper, we present a novel visualization approach for the quantitative analysis of knee movement patterns in time-varying data sets. The presented approach has been developed for the analysis of patello-femoral instability, which is a common knee problem, caused by the abnormal movement of the patella (kneecap). Currently, patello-femoral analysis is based on acquisitions performed durin...
